The History of Sweet Potato Pie

One of the best Southern pies to ever be created is the Sweet Potato Pie. As a great traditional side dish or dessert, it is often served during one of America’s favorite holiday season. During Thanksgiving and Christmas time, anyone will be able to smell the aroma of this timeless and favorite pie. In the Northern States, the addition of marshmallows was adopted as a great topping, and it added additional sweetness to the already sweet and tasty Sweet Potato Pie. This great American pie represents a great dish that the first European settlers ate. Since then, Sweet Potato Pie has become a must have during the holiday seasons.

One of America’s favorite pies is usually created with no top crust and is made as a large tart. The main ingredients are of sweet potatoes, also called yams, milk, sugar, eggs and the flavored seasonal spice of nutmeg. Additional ingredients could include vanilla, banana extracts brown sugar, maple syrup, molasses, orange juice and other great sweet ingredients that match the spirit of the holiday season. The actual color of the Sweet Potato Pie can vary from a light and silky to a very dense custard filling. Every recipe is different depending on the ratios used of the sweet potato, milk and eggs. Sweet potatoes are in season during the November and December months, but can be found year round.
